Provenance

From the collection of Jim & Joni Palmer - National Baseball Hall of Famer (1990) and pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles (1965–1967, 1969–1984).

They met my uncle-R.C. after R.C. came across a Jockey ad in People Magazine which Jim was modeling for. The ad featured Jim in a pair of Jockey underwear and behind him was "Minna", a 1982 lithograph by R.C..

They corresponded with R.C. and Virginia, eventually making their way to Taos. Their collection included several lithographs, ceramics and this serigraph. In 1993 they visited the Gallery and purchased this: R.C.'s only triptych serigraph.

Suites Vs Triptych

Suites and Diptychs, Triptychs, etc are often confused and its understandable as both are multi-part works. Suites can be looked at as collections of individual artworks - often with a uniting theme - whereas diptychs or triptychs are a singular artworks that exists in 2, 3, or more parts.

As a triptych piece, R.C. only signed one of the 3 parts, the second part has the title, and the 3rd contains the edition number.

This is R.C.'s only Triptych serigraph.

Examples of his suites include:

  • Homage To Navajo Women suite consisting of
    • "Contemplation", "Walking Women", "Starry Night", "Young Navajo Woman", "Corn Mother", "Noon Meditation"
  • Gorman In Taos Suite consisting of
    • "Picuris", "San Ildefonso", "Taos", "Santo Domingo"
  • The Anniversary Suite, celebrating 40 years since R.C.'s first graphic work: "Apache Devil Dancer", consisting of
    • "Acomita", "Chuska Storm", "Delfina", "Madrid", "Summer", "Wind Song"

Roudolf Carl Gorman, My uncle, better known as R.C. Gorman was dubbed "The Picasso of American Indian Art" by the New York Times after participating in the MET's “Masterworks from the Museum of the American Indian” Show in 1973. He was the only living artist included in the show and his artwork was selected for both the front and back cover of the show’s catalogue.

His work spans over 5 decades and includes many mediums including pastel, lithography, serigraphy, bronze, oil, acrylic, ceramic, cast-paper, etched glass, and tapestry. His style is distinct but varied. Perhaps best known for his colorful and vibrant depictions of Native Life, particularly of Navajo, Pueblo and Hispanic Women, R.C.'s art also includes many explorations of traditional-everyday as well as ceremonial Navajo life. His work and style continuously evolved. R.C. Gorman’s art continues to be cherished throughout the world.
